Not all breast cancers are alike.  And not all breast cancer patients are alike.

NorthShore University HealthSystem(NorthShore) is fortunate to have a team of specialists dedicated to the care of the person diagnosed with breast cancer.  This team includes fellowship-trained mammography doctors, fellowship-trained surgeons specializing in breast care, and board-certified medical and radiation oncologists who specialize in the treatment and care of the breast cancer patient.  A multidisciplinary conference is held weekly at two of our hospitals to discuss newly diagnosed and high risk patients.  Pathology specialists review biopsy slides, radiologists review mammograms and ultrasound findings, and treatment strategies are discussed.  Nurses who have oncology specialization work in collaboration with these physicians to provide personalized care to each patient.

Through the course of your care for cancer at NorthShore, you may interact with any of several oncology specialists.  Some of the types of physician specialists are:

  • Medical Oncologists  - Physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer are called oncologists. Our medical oncologists use a wide range of interventions, including chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy to treat cancer and associated conditions.
  • Radiation Oncologists - Physicians who specialize in the use of radiation therapy for cancer patients.
  • Surgical Oncologists – Surgical oncologists are specially trained in the surgical treatment of cancer.

Your physician will discuss your treatment options with you to ensure that you are comfortable with treatment plan decisions and that you know what to expect.
