NorthShore University HealthSystem offers a three-year categorical residency, a preliminary year program and a transitional year program. Our combined programs have four chief residents, 40 first year, 17 second year and 17 third year trainees. Both our internal medicine categorical/preliminary year and transitional year programs achieved the longest possible ACGME accreditation length with no citations.
Categorical Internship (17 positions)
This foundation year in our three year core internal medicine program is geared to provide a mix of inpatient and outpatient internal medicine training. Core rotations include general medical floor rotations at Evanston, Glenbrook, or Skokie Hospitals and one block of emergency medicine and ICU. Outpatient medicine training includes a half day a week of continuity clinic.
Preliminary Internship (13 positions)
In preparation for further specialty training, preliminary year interns are provided with core internal medicine training through both inpatient and outpatient rotations. Elective time is available in the effort to individualize curricular needs for each trainee. Each intern completes one block of emergency medicine and one block of ICU at Evanston Hospital as well as general medical floor rotations at Evanston and Glenbrook or Skokie Hospitals.
Transitional Internship (10 Positions)
This program is for trainees who desire a more medicine-based transitional year in preparation for future specialty training. Core rotations include general medicine floors at Evanston and Glenbrook or Skokie hospitals, an ICU block at Evanston Hospital, an emergency medicine rotation, and an ambulatory rotation which is typically spent in a family practice primary care office. A wide variety of electives are available to complement training for future specialties.
