The PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency conducted by NorthShore University HealthSystem in Glenview, Illinois is accredited by ASHP, in partnership with APhA.
PURPOSE STATEMENT
PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program prepares residents to practice as clinical pharmacists in the community/outpatient pharmacy and diverse ambulatory care settings. The residency program supports NorthShore’s mission to “ help everyone in our communities be their best" by providing the resident with skills to confidently provide care using evidenced based medicine to improve the health and wellbeing of the patients within the communities they serve. Being part of a large health system gives residents the opportunity to work in unique hospital outpatient pharmacies and diverse clinical settings including: anticoagulation, oncology, heart failure, comprehensive care, general medicine, oncology, population management, and hepatitis C. Additionally, the residents will have the opportunity to collaborate with other healthcare providers in various settings; develop viable pharmacy services; effectively manage a community/outpatient pharmacy and ambulatory clinic; advance community pharmacy practice, and educate pharmacists and other health care providers. The residents will have various opportunities to provide educational presentations to the patients and the community as well as participate in health screenings, vaccination clinics, and medication take back events. Residents will also have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through experiences within their pharmacy management learning experience and participation in corporate and departmental committees. Residents will also have the opportunity to mentor and teach pharmacy students through a formal Teaching Certificate program and IPPE/APPE preceptorship.
Outpatient Pharmacy Department and Ambulatory Care Services
NorthShore University HealthSystem Outpatient Pharmacy Department is comprised of three hospital outpatient pharmacies located in Evanston, Glenbrook, and Skokie Hospitals. In addition, the outpatient pharmacy department has oncology specialty pharmacies at Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals. Highland Park Hospital has a combined outpatient and oncology specialty pharmacy. NorthShore operates 3 pharmacist-managed Anticoagulation clinics at Skokie, Glenbrook, and Highland Park Hospitals. In addition, ambulatory pharmacists manage patients in a heart failure clinic and cardiodiabetes clinic at Skokie Hospital. Ambulatory pharmacists collaborate with health care teams in the NorthShore Comprehensive Care Center, general medicine clinic, Hepatitis C clinic, and Kellogg Cancer Center. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams at the health system is emphasized in order to improve patient outcomes.
Residency Program
The NorthShore PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program was established in 2007 to develop and implement advanced patient care services in the pharmacies. The NorthShore PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program was granted full ASHP accreditation in 2009. The program recruits for three residency positions.

The residency will develop a resident’s ability to implement and provide advanced patient care services in a community pharmacy setting. In addition, the residency will focus on the development of pharmacy management skills as well as professional and leadership skills necessary for advancing pharmacy practice.
