Life of a Resident

Our Curriculum

Residents will do most of their rotations at Evanston Hospital with some specialty and ICU rotations at Glenbrook Hospital.  A typical schedule for a PGY-1 internal medicine resident would consist of 6 Floor/Night Float months, 1 ICU month, an ED month and electives and clinic weeks interspersed thought the year.  Preliminary Year residents typically have 3-4 Floor/Night Float months, 1 ICU month, an ED month, as well as a wide array of electives to choose from that will prepare them for their future specialty.

Internal medicine residents will follow their own cohort of patients in our Evanston Hospital-based clinic as part of their continuity clinic weeks.  During their clinic weeks, residents will focus solely on the care of their ambulatory patients and will attend small group conferences focused on the Yale Ambulatory Curriculum.  Our underserved clinic population is extraordinarily diverse and provides many learning opportunities in the context of a wide variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Housing and Quality of Life

Excellent housing is available in Evanston, Chicago, and the surrounding communities. Located three blocks from the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline, Evanston Hospital is close to all the facilities and resources of Northwestern University's main campus and sports stadium. Evanston is a well-established community with an active cultural and recreational life, easily accessible by both Chicago's elevated train system (the "L") and Metra, the commuter rail system servicing the suburbs. Evanston prides itself on a variety of dining options and one-of-a-kind shopping districts with unique stores and boutiques. Our spectacular lakefront offers swimming, sailing and boating, with over 80 parks and playgrounds, many of which are located on or near Lake Michigan.

Transportation

Public transportation is excellent. Evanston Hospital is located across the street from the Central Street elevated ( "L" ) train stop. This train line makes all local stops in Evanston and Chicago. The Metra line, which links Evanston to downtown Chicago and the suburbs, is just a few blocks away. Free parking is available in the Evanston Hospital parking structure as well as at Glenbrook Hospital. Free shuttle service is also provided on an hourly basis between Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals.
