10/11/2012 - 170 supporters and friends of The Karen Dove Cabral Foundation gathered at the Evanston Golf Club on Saturday, September 22, 2012, for the organization’s fourth annual Butterfly Ball. Christian Farr, reporter and anchorman for NBC5 Chicago, served as the master of ceremonies at the event which featured dinner, drinks and dancing, as well as a stellar silent auction and raffle, which allowed one lucky attendee to win a weekend away at the beautiful Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island Michigan.

In addition to celebrating The Karen Dove Cabral Foundation’s growth and mission, the Butterfly Ball served as an opportunity to honor Leslie Mendoza Temple, MD, Medical Director of the NorthShore Integrative Medicine Program. Dr. Temple’s expertise in Integrative Medicine has enabled hundreds of oncology patients to achieve mental, physical and spiritual well-being – an achievement which echoes the mission of the Foundation.

Thanks to the generous support of those in attendance, the Butterfly Ball raised more than $29,500.00 net proceeds for NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center. The Kellogg Cancer Center offers comprehensive and compassionate care for oncology patients and their families. Funds raised by the Butterfly Ball will enable the Kellogg Cancer Center to provide much needed support to young mothers with breast cancer by helping fund non-covered medical expenses—like integrative medicine therapies--childcare fees, transportation and lodging while undergoing treatment.

The Karen Dove Cabral Foundation, based in Evanston, was founded in 2008 by the family and friends of Karen Dove Cabral. Karen passed away in 2007 after six years of living with breast cancer. Her family and friends witnessed the challenges she faced coping with the everyday stresses of being a young mother while dealing with surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, recovery and recurrence.
