NorthShore Welcomes Renowned Physician to Lead Department of Medicine

7/18/2011 - NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) is pleased to announce Theodore Mazzone, M.D., as the new chair of the Department of Medicine.

Previously, Dr. Mazzone was the founding Director of the University of Illinois (U of I) Center for Clinical and Translational Science, which encompassed faculty and leadership participation from 12 U of I colleges and institutes. He also served in clinical leadership positions at Rush University Medical Center and has held faculty or staff appointments at Michael Reese Hospital and the University of Chicago.

Neaman, President and CEO of NorthShore. “The skills and expertise he brings to our Department of Medicine will enhance our commitment to excellence in the care we provide for our patients as well as training for the next generation of leaders in the medical field.”

“I was born and raised in Chicago and have worked here for most of my professional career,” said Dr. Mazzone. “I am extremely pleased to join NorthShore University HealthSystem as chair of medicine. I believe NorthShore provides exciting opportunities to continue developing innovative approaches to advance patient care.”

Dr. Mazzone received his doctor of medicine degree with distinction from Northwestern University Medical School. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at UCLA Medical Center, and a senior fellowship in Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition at the University of Washington. 

Dr. Mazzone has been a member of multiple peer review panels for the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association (AHA). He has served in leadership capacities for numerous professional organizations including the American Diabetes Association and the AHA. He currently serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine for Endocrinology and Metabolism. He has published more than 125 scientific articles and has been named every year in “America’s Top Doctors” and as one of “Chicago’s Top Doctors” since 2001.
