NorthShore University HealthSystem

Headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) is a comprehensive, fully integrated, healthcare delivery system that serves the Chicago region. The system includes four hospitals in Evanston, Glenview, Highland Park and Skokie. NorthShore employs approximately 9,000 and has 2,400 affiliated physicians, including a 700+ physician, multispecialty group practice with over 75 office locations under NorthShore Medical Group. Further, NorthShore supports teaching and research as the principal teaching affiliate for the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

The NorthShore Research Institute focuses on clinical and translational research, including leadership in outcomes research and clinical trials. The NorthShore University HealthSystem Foundation is the primary philanthropic entity of NorthShore. The Foundation raises charitable contributions and engages volunteer friends in support of NorthShore’s ongoing mission to preserve and improve human life.

NorthShore has annual revenues of $1.6 billion and more than 8,700 employees. The integrated health system has significant capabilities in a wide spectrum of clinical programs, including cancer, heart, orthopaedics, high-risk maternity, pediatrics and the newly formed NorthShore Neurological Institute. There are more than 50 physicians on staff at the Neurological Institute—many nationally and even internationally recognized in their field.

NorthShore is a Magnet recognized organization, the only one in Illinois designated as a system to receive this prestigious honor that demonstrates excellence in nursing and high standards in patient care. NorthShore is a national leader in the implementation of innovative technologies, including electronic medical records (EMR). In 2003, NorthShore was among the first in the country to successfully launch a system-wide EMR with demonstrable benefits in quality, safety, efficiency and service to patients. NorthShore has been recognized by multiple national organizations for this notable achievement.

  • Evanston Hospital demonstrates leadership in cancer and cardiac care, providing specialized cancer services at the Kellogg Cancer Center and comprehensive heart care at the Cardiovascular Care Center. Physicians work alongside leading researchers to translate the latest technology, treatment and research into improved patient care. As the regional center for high-risk obstetrics, the Women’s Hospital offers a comfortable birthing environment where high-risk mothers and their babies have access to the latest technology and a highly trained staff.
  • Glenbrook Hospital features a gastroenterology (GI) suite with advanced technology. Paired with a highly qualified team of physicians, the GI program is among the strongest in the region for research, diagnosis and treatment. The hospital offers specialized neurological services including a sleep center, a cognitive and memory disorder program and a women’s neurological center. Advanced ophthalmologic treatments, such as LASIK and Crystalens, are available at the Eye and Vision Center. Glenbrook is also now home for three new centers: Breast Health, Prostate Cancer and Total Joint Replacement.
  • Highland Park Hospital is the site of the first open heart surgery in Lake County. The Ellen Marks Ambulatory Care Center offers advanced capabilities, including multi-disciplinary cancer care at the Kellogg Cancer Center, a CT/PET Scan for diagnostics and a CT Simulator and Linear Accelerator for radiation therapy. With a renovated Emergency Department, Highland Park Hospital participates as the region’s “pod” hospital for disaster response activities, coordinating Lake County’s efforts when confronted with a disaster. A wide variety of mental health services, including a center for eating disorders, adolescent psychiatric care and the Doreen E. Chapman Center for substance abuse, are also available.
  • Skokie Hospital is an acute care medical center known for its expertise in cancer care, cardiac care and orthopaedics. The Illinois Foundation for Quality Health Care has recognized the Hospital as one of 43 hospitals nationwide for its Surgical Care Improvement Project Commitment to Quality Award. Additionally, in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Hospital Survey, Skokie Hospital scored in the top 50 percent of participating hospitals in 2007 and 2008. With its comprehensive cardiology and heart surgery programs, Skokie Hospital is one of the nation’s Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals.

NorthShore University HealthSystem Medical Group

Medical Group is a not-for-profit faculty group practice comprised of more than 600 primary and specialty care physicians located throughout the north and northwest suburbs of Chicago. Attending physicians are on faculty at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

NorthShore University HealthSystem Home and Hospice Services

The hospital-based, non-profit agency offers a full spectrum of home care and Hospice services including skilled nursing, physical and occupational therapy and home medical equipment. Our caregivers represent a wide range of medical specialties and work with the patient, family and physician to tailor home care to meet the individual needs of each patient.

NorthShore University HealthSystem Research Institute

The Institute serves as a focal point for more than 1,000 active research projects, nearly 200 externally funded research faculty and over $100 million in external research funding. The Charles R. Walgreen, Jr. Building on the Evanston Hospital campus houses the Center for Advanced Imaging and research and administrative space for physician-scientists. Emphasis on translational research assures discoveries from the basic sciences and engineering are brought promptly to the bedside.

NorthShore University HealthSystem Foundation

The Foundation provides philanthropic support and builds advocacy for NorthShore. It seeks to obtain the philanthropic support required to ensure that NorthShore can provide medical care, including "Charity Care," advanced research and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

Governance is carried out by a 25-member NorthShore University HealthSystem Corporate Board with fiduciary and operations responsibility. Harry M. J. Kraemer Jr. serves as the current Chairman.

Teaching Affiliation

NorthShore University HealthSystem is the principal teaching affiliate of the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine.
